Sears, Roebuck, and Company had a run of over twenty years at 29700 Lakeshore Blvd. in the Shoregate shopping center. On December 1, 1982, the unit had a new tenant: Jote's Discount Store.
Does anyone else remember this big logo on the building along WITH the daisies?! I hated this store as a kid (more than going to church) but I always liked the daisies.
Also, were you from a family that called Zayre "Zayre's" and Jote's "Jote's" as in rhymes with oats?
Anyway, Jote's opened it's doors in Willowick Wednesday, December 1, 1982. Discounts just in time for Christmas!
Bring a friend, because you'll never save more than at Jote's. We'd just like to see you try.
Jote's was the brainchild of John Fazio, owner of Fisher Foods. Jote's came about as a result of a non-compete clause that barred him from opening grocery stores in the Cleveland area. John and wife Terry Fazio moved to Dallas, but continued running Jote's. Fazio passed away in 2019 at the age of 99. The very name "Jote's" was a combination of John and Terry.
Jote's had 2 things that really stick out in my very young brain, and those were:
And... The talking cash registers. This video is from a store in Texas, and I remember the Jote's registers having a lower, more "masculine" pitch, but they were loud and each and every one of them talked. They were called Positalkers.
The above listing of stores is from November 1990.
Marc Glassman, once a manager at a Bernie Shulman's opened a Marc's location in Middleburg Heights in 1979. 4 years later in 1983, Glassman purchased the Bernie Shulman's stores and kept the name due to popularity and in part, out of respect for Shulman.
By 1992, all stores, including the singular Jote's, rebranded as Marc's.
